All-electric BMW X7 Coming?

German magazine Wirtschaftswoche has reported that the BMW board is evaluating potential designs for a 100% electric SUV based on the X7. This model would be built in addition to the BMW X5 eDrive, which is expected to be released this year or early next year.

The push for an electric X7 is probably due to the imminent release and impressive pre-order numbers of the Tesla Model X. BMW wants to compete with Tesla so as to not lose market share because people are looking for electric vehicles that are of luxury quality.

BMW is still at a disadvantage if it wants to take on the Model X though. First, the BMW X7 would come out a few years after the Model X. Second, BMW has no supercharger network, which makes its electric vehicles less practical and may have some people turning away because of range anxiety.

The news that BMW is considering an electric X7 shouldn't come as too much of a surprise though. BMW announced a while ago that it plans to have an electric version of every car in its lineup by the year 2020.

It seems that BMW CEO Harold Kruger is waiting to see the public reaction to the Tesla Model X, as well as the actual content of the vehicle before making a final pitch to the BMW board.

The real question is whether or not the BMW X7 eDrive will be able to draw buyers away from the Tesla Model X.

Being a big vehicle with a lot more opportunities to store batteries this thing is bound to be capable on just purely electric power and electric systems have a ton of torque, enough to get this thing going with much less effort than a traditional gas engine.
