Audi plans Q9 SUV, because 9 is bigger than 7

Plenty of brands are getting into this segment. Audi is the latest to announce that it will be offering a new 3 row SUV.

People have speculated that the Q9 may be the size of the current Q7. Right now, the Q7 is about the size of the GL and seats 7. That means that Audi is missing an SUV with 5 seats to compete with the Cayenne, ML, X5 and RR Sport.

This move seems to be a reaction to the BMW X7, and Land Rover supersizing the range Rover. But, Audi CEO Rupert Stadler did say, "If we do [a Q9], it will not be because of what our rivals are doing."

who cares what Rupert said, its not illegal for auto execs to lie to us, good thing too. It happens everyday

because you just know that once the Q9 comes out, there will be a subsequent VW based on it, a larger than Cayenne SUV, maybe they'll even try and repurpose it for Bentley...

Do you think that the Q9 will be the size of the current Q7 or will it be even bigger than the current Q7?

I am not that excited about the Q9. I think that the Audi design language won't look very nice when its put onto such a hulking vehicle.

Im thinking it will be bigger and less sporty looking and more aimed for utility, kinda like their version of an Escalade if you get what i mean

At a certain size it seems like all of these huge SUVs look pretty much the same. Sure they look a bit different but they are all the same shape, a big box that basically looks like a Yukon.

I think there has been a movement away from vehicles quite that big in the industry. I'm kinda surprised that Audi is going this big.
